Thing 18

Thing 18: I really like this on-line word processor. It is available from any site on any computer. It is another venue for students to use to create documents. I have already encouraged my students to try it!

Did check out the Sandbox 2.0, but I don't see how I would ever use this for the classroom. I'd like to use it for personal use, but couldn't add comments as I didn't have access to it. Sandbox was siilar to walking into a library and looking for references in hard copy, but was much quicker....

Things 1-17

Thing 17: The further I go in this class, the more frustrated I become. I need direct instruction that includes modeling of what the procedures are to create a wiki. Is anyone out there in the same spot as I am. Let's visit...

Thing 16: Went to sites, but couldn't add to any, didn't have access. The video on wikis looks easy, but I attempted to make a wiki and got all confused. I think I have one, but am not sure.

Thing 15: After reading Rick Anderson's "Away from the Ice Bergs'" I can realize that I (we) are on the verge of an information explosion. Learning how to access it all is difficult for me to process. I did agree that our libraries are remanants of bygone information, practices, and attitudes that no longer make sense. He listed three "ice bergs" that get in the way of accessing information. I, myself, have always realied on the "print" information; I felt compfortable and secure with my research. However, after reading his third "iceberg," I reallly connected to it. In the past it was difficulty to find the time to physically go to a library for research. It was a long and tedious task, and then if material was checked out, I couldn't gather the needed information. Today, with Web 2.0 that no longer is necessary. I now merely need to sit in front of a computer and do intensive reasearch. I can easily find documents needed with a click of a button. In his first "iceberg, I found that the whole concept of what a library is to be out-of-date. As information changes, so does the way we store and retrieve information. No longer will great halls need to be filled with print material. Now, we can store information on the Web and not take up great space doing so. Also, the old search engines are becoming obsolete. Information is quickly obtained just by going to various blogs. I believe that today's information makes the learner much more active in the thinking and anaylizing process of research.....Good article

Thing #14: I have created search engines for educational blogs at Technorati Attention INdex - the top 50 blog sites. Good one stop shopping for blogs of daily news stories.

Thing #13: Well, I've created bookmarks on special education in the following areas: NIMH - ADHD; Wrightslaw Special Education Law and Advocacy; Special Education Resources: Autism; and Special Education Learning Disabilities Resources for Special Needs. I hope to use these as a source of information for parents and students, and of course myself. I'm a little shaky on this technology, but feel the more I use it, the better I'll be at it.

Thing #12: I think I have successfully completed Thing #12. I have set up 3 search engines on Rollyo.com The engines are Poudre References; Reference Search, and Learning Strategies. I hop these will be helpful to people looking for the information I have included (with tags) in the engines.

Things 10 and 11: This is a typical bike in China. It looks like I am able to import pictures from using an image generator. I will use an image generator frequently now in my emails. They say a picture is worth a thousand words! Also note my text generator. It was moving, but doesn't move now! Don't know how to fix it, will need to read up on that part....

Thing 8 and Thing 9 weren't so hard (after two weeks of trying to understand). I do feel a little slow in grasping some of the technologies. I did get a Google Reader account, and I also have Blogline. I've subscribed to 10 or so feeds. Now, I'm spending my time reading about news of the world, and then don't get to the other "Things" I need to do!

Things 5, Thing 6, and Thing 7: are completed. I have visited flickr often and am feeling comfortable with that site. I have created a blog on technology, it was on the Britannica Blog about Moving toward Web 2.0 in K-12 Education. The first time I blogged about this I was uncertain on how it would benefit students with whom I work. However, now (after a little over a month) I realize this is going to be the way of education. My students already know much more than I do, so I'll have to do some catch-up work. I see using blogging as a useful way to stay in touch with my students and help them with assignments. I can also see them submitting assignments to over the web.

Thing 3 and Thing 4. I've been blogging with others and have set up my first post. That was a long time ago, but now that I feel more comfortable with this technology I'll be blogging more. Takes an old dog a little longer to learn new tricks!

Thing 1 and Thing 2: I've read the blog and have found out how the program will be working. I've made my contract, and what I am focusing on is how to overcome my lack of confidence with

technology.

Well, here's my attempt at image generating. I've tried and tried, and have finally had success.
